If you are looking for inspiration where to go during the weekend Fort George may be interesting place to visit especially if you like exploring British strongholds.
Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. After the defeat (1746) at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, King George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. It was completed in 1769 and since then was maintained in readiness for the action that never came.
In the fort you will find garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms which includes bayoneted muskets, swords, pikes and ammunition which will provide an interesting insight into 18th century military life.
Apart from visiting the museum you can wonder on the defence walls surrounding where you can enjoy superb panoramic views.
Fort George is the only monument in Scotland still functioning as intended i.e. a working army barracks but still welcoming visitors.
