The following Carthage travel guide is based on our own experience and therefore description given in the guide necessarily contains an element of subjective opinion which may not reflect your own experience on another occasion.
Carthage without a doubt is very interesting place to visit during your Tunisian holidays. It has a number of ancient archaeological sites and also offers fantastic view from the summit of Mount Byrsa over the peninsula.
If you are in Carthage and have a bit of free time we strongly recommend that you visit mount Byrsa which was the Acropolis of Punic and Roman Carthage. It is really worth the effort to climb on the top to enjoy scenic view over the sea and visit fine renovated museum which exhibits collections of archaeological finds (pottery, stelae, sculptures, mosaics, ceramics and fragments of artefacts) from the site from three major periods: Phoenicio - Punic, Romano – African and Arab – Islamic.
Just a few minutes walk from the metro station you may visit the amphitheatre. The amphitheatre in Carthage was one of the largest in the Empire, the height of the arches being the wonder of visitors in the Middle Ages. It was an essential place of entertainment in a Roman city where people from all walks of life mixed together were enjoying the gladiators fighting animals.
This is one of the most popular tourist spots in Carthage. All major organised excursions have Thermal Baths included into their itinerary. The remains of the baths at the water’s edge were among the largest in the Roman Empire.
Few minutes – north east - walk from the metro station are located archaeological excavations of Roman - very interesting place to visit if you like history. It may be extremely warm in the summer time.

Be careful during your visit to the Antonine Thermal Baths and do not point your camera towards the presidential palace - your camera may be confiscated by the security. Please refer to the map for the exact location of the baths and the palace.
If you are visiting Carthage during an organised excursion to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and Tunis the itinerary usually only include a short visit to the Antonine Thermal Baths. Therefore, if you would like to explore Carthage we would recommend that you would visit Carthage on your own. You may come to Carthage by the metro (do not be confused it is not underground service despite its name) from Tunis city centre - frequent but very busy and extremely hot service.
If you like photography you really should go to the top of Mount Byrsa to take some scenic landscapes.
All major attractions are located within the walking distance from the metro station.
